Leave the World Behind, a 2023 American apocalyptic psychological thriller directed, written, and produced by Sam Esmail, takes viewers on a gripping ride through a world on the brink. Based on
Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel, the film features a powerhouse cast led by Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha'la, and Kevin Bacon.
The movie unfolds in five parts: The House, The Curve, The Noise, The Flood, and The End. Beginning with Amanda Sanford (Julia Roberts) impulsively taking her family on an unplanned vacation to a
rented Long Island house. As phones and technology break down, the family grapples with the sudden isolation. The arrival of G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la), who are
the owners of the luxury apartment they rented, adds an unsettling layer to the already tense atmosphere.
Strange occurrences, from malfunctioning self-driving cars, planes dropping from the sky, unexplained shrieking noises, and even strange animal behaviors, put the family on edge. The
storyline weaves survivalism, government intrigue, and interpersonal dynamics, keeping the audience on edge as they navigate a world in disarray.
The film's strength lies in its stellar cast, delivering standout performances from Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, and Myha'la. Julia, Mahershala, and Ethan remind us why they’re OGs
in Hollywood, but my personal favorite is Myha’la, and yes, mostly because her character is smug and named Ruth. Haha
The music choices, especially “The Revenge” by Joey Bada$$ as intro, and the Rembrandts’ theme song, “I’ll Be There For You” as outro, contribute to the film's atmospheric intensity. The soundtracks enhance the overall viewing experience, adding to the mood that permeates each scene. You may
want to add some of them to your playlist because I did. However, as the film builds suspense and curiosity, it fails to provide a conclusive resolution which
was such a bummer. The deliberate ambiguity in explaining unfolding events leaves viewers yearning for more clarity. Although, the decision to withhold key revelations may be a strategic move to set
the stage and build anticipation for a sequel as we’ve seen in some movies in the past.
In essence, Leave the World Behind was quite promising, especially during the first hour, with strong performances and soundtracks, but it failed to land a good closing in my books. For those who relish
a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end, Leave the World Behind is for you. Just be prepared to have lingering questions and a craving for more answers once the credits roll.
Do let me know what you think if you’ve seen it or when you do.

Suspense isn’t my favourite but this definitely has me wanting to try.
