If you’re into shows that mix crime, mystery, and a bit of sci-fi, Bodies on Netflix is a must-watch. It was created by Paul Tomalin and takes inspiration from a graphic novel by Si Spencer-originally published by DC Comics/Vertigo and serves up eight episodes of suspense and intrigue.

The story begins in 2023 showing Detective Sergeant Shahara Hasan on the hunt for a teenager named Syed. Things get wild when a dead body shows up in London’s Longharvest Lane, setting off investigations in 1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053. SAME BODY. The series follows four London detectives (Shahara Hasan, Charles Whiteman, Alfred Hillinghead and Iris Maplewood) in four different timelines, investigating the same murder. It’s like a time-traveling crime puzzle that keeps you guessing.

As the story unfolds, Bodies thrusts us into The Executive’s dystopian regime, where the ominous slogan “Know You Are Loved” (KYAL) rules United Britain. Now, we’re not just solving crimes; we’re grappling with quantum gravity, dodging bombs, and facing off against a cult named Chapel Perilous. It’s a genre mashup that keeps you glued, but it comes with a catch.

The cast, led by Jacob Fortune-Lloyd and Shira Haas, does a great job bringing their characters to life. They tackle challenges like wartime prejudice and a future ruled by a group called The Executive. The music, by Jon Opstad, adds to the suspense, and the camera work captures each time period’s vibe.

One cool thing is how the series weaves the theme of love, mystery tattoos, seances, cults, and the consequences of messing with history. Elias Mannix, played by Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, is a key character with a lot of layers. Watch out for that!

While the show is undeniably thrilling, there may be a small hitch. The pacing might feel more like a leisurely stroll than a sprint, and the intricate plot could leave you feeling a bit like you missed a step. It’s not your typical binge-watch; it’s a puzzle that demands your attention and a willingness to unravel its layers. So, hang in there!

In the end, Bodies invites you not only to question its reality but also to challenge your own perceptions. It’s no wonder it made Top 10 on Netflix UK in less than a month after release.

Are you up for it? Watch, and let me know what you think of Hasan’s grit, Whiteman’s clandestine dealings, Hillinghead’s choice, and Maplewood’s journey through the unknown.

Share your thoughts in the comment and let’s untangle this web of intrigue together. I look forward to hearing from you.

Ciao!

I’m impressed that you finished it. I didn’t get past the fourth episode because I found it boring. Also, nice write up! Makes me want to finish it

Bodies could have done better than a limited series to be honest. The little dialogue between hillinghead and Floyd in my opinion was not substantial enough to be that convincing as he was only just trying to protect her daughter. Time travel or the general concept of time folding exists such that an event that is happening is actually a trifecta in infinity. Meaning it has already happened, it is happening and it will happen….over and over again. So I’m sure that wasn’t Elias’s first rodeo and may well have been his thousandth; Hence my initial reservations on the need to have extended the series. Hopefully, this dynamic is visited in the second season should there be any. Great Write Up Ruth, May the Forces be with you.

Oh yes! I agree that many things were left unanswered regarding Elias Mannix. Hopefully we get the clarity we need in the next season.

      Thank you for the feedback!

Hmmm! I’ve always been a fan of crime and mystery, but I’m unsure how I feel about sci-fi. The read is luring enough; just might see it.

Hi Nma, you definitely should give it a try! I mean, how would you know for certain if you don’t?!
